About the OPPORTUNITY –
We have a new opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Hunter Class Frigate Program based at Osborne, South Australia Naval Shipyard reporting to the Principal Mechanical Engineer.
The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for delivering accurate, safe, and standards-compliant mechanical engineering solutions for the development or modification of mechanical equipment, systems, structures, and materials.
This role involves collaborating with the broader engineering team, production, sustainment, procurement personnel, and external suppliers. Mechanical engineering services encompass design, development, testing, integration, product ionisation, installation, and management of mechanical equipment while ensuring alignment with technical, schedule, and cost objectives.

Key responsibilities include:
- Apply experience and knowledge of the BAE Hunter Change Process to manage design modifications and ensure compliance with change management procedures.
- Apply knowledge, skills, and experience in mechanical engineering principles, company products, services, and governance to develop and modify mechanical equipment, systems, and structures.
- Design, develop, and analyse mechanical solutions, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in the development of detailed mechanical designs, participate in design reviews, and support manufacturing, integration, validation, and qualification activities.
- Identify, analyse, and resolve engineering issues throughout the product lifecycle, contributing to design assurance and change management.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring requirements are understood, considered, and incorporated into designs where appropriate.
- Ensure documentation, designs, and artefacts comply with regulatory, legislative, and company quality control standards, including change management processes.
- Provide realistic project status updates, identify problem areas, and implement agreed recovery plans to meet technical, schedule, and cost objectives.
About YOU
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Mechatronic or Aeronautical Engineering.
- Eligible for membership with the Institute of Engineers Australia (IEAust).
- Experience gained in developing some of the following aspects; simple mechanical designs, participation in design reviews, undertaking typical design analyses and implementation of solutions, their integration, validation and qualification testing.
- Ability to function confidently within a project team environment.
- Self-motivation and a proactive approach to progressing all assigned tasks.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with others, including designers/ draftspersons, production, suppliers, and other engineers.
- Proficient use of a Product Lifecycle Management tools (i.e. Windchill/ TeamCenter).
- Experience in the relevant engineering tools for design analysis and solution development as dependent on role.
- Baseline Defence security clearance and eligibility to obtain NV1.
- Eligibility to be cleared for International Traffic In Arms (ITAR) regulations.
